Giza, Egypt

Coming down from a World Cup high is pretty tough… unless your next stop is the famous Giza Pyramids.

I won’t go too much into the history… since I’m sure you all learned it to exhaustion in 7th grade. The pyramids are the oldest, and only remaining of the original Seven Wonders of the World. They were also the tallest structure ever built for 3800 (!) years after being constructed. They are a pretty awesome sight.

DSC03375Originally, the Pyramids were covered with a smooth stone… which has eroded over the years, except at the very top. DSC03421IMG_0795Walking like an Egyptian.

After the Pyramids, we visited the Great Sphinx of Giza. It is the largest statue in the world, standing almost 250ft high. Even though it’s so gargantuan, it is still dwarfed by the pyramids.

We spent a few days in Cairo (more on that next), before heading to the Red Sea for a mini beach vacay…

Franschhoek , on the outskirts of Capetown, is home to the gorgeous South African wine country. The valley was settled by the French in the 1600’s – when it was filled with herds of elephants (who sets up shop where there are herds of elephants?) – the centuries-old vines are still producing grapes today.

The Khalerias have a serious case of World Cup Fever.

South Africa is such an electifying place to be during the cup, you kind of have no choice.
We’re adjusting our schedule to watch games.
We bought vuvuzelas (google that, I don’t know how to make a link on this computer).
We listen to the FIFA theme song about once an hour (Performed by Shakira. Google that too)
AND we scored tickets to watch Germany annihilate Australia last week. Awesome.

Other updates: we’re in Egypt. It’s bloody hot and the men are bloody aggresive. But the pyramids are bloody amazing.
T-two weeks until I have a computer back and I can post pretty pictures and you can stop reading my babbling. Thanks for sticking with me in the meantime…

We’re headed to Kruger Park on safari to see “The Big Five”.

(For those of you who are like me and have no clue what that means, the Big Five was termed by game hunters as the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot in Africa. They are: lion, elephant, water buffalo, leopard, and rhino)

Spent the last few days in wine country with the Veldmans (love you guys!) and driving along the coast of South Africa to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, where families of baboons run along the highway and try to steal food and cameras out of peoples cars. Seriously. Kind of like this. Africa is the most awesome place ever.

Be back on the 11th!

**Computer update: still don’t have one. The previously mentioned lovely gentleman also took Ryan’s laptop charger, so we’re totally hosed.
