World Cup Fever in South Africa

After our safari in Kruger Park, we headed to Durban for the opening ceremonies of the 2010 World Cup.

Durban is a coastal city – the city itself isn’t the impressive, but it has a gorgeous 6km long beach. Free FanFests were set up all along the sand with giant screens for people to watch the futbol games. (And the beer was only 2 USD – beats Giants Stadium anyday!)

Since we hadn’t expected to be in South Africa at all, we didn’t have any tickets to the games – and had heard it was pretty impossible to find any last minute. Luckily, we happened upon a FIFA official ticket office, and scored two of eighteen (!!) tickets available for the Germany vs. Australia game, at face value!

(Germany ended up beating Australia 4-0, and going on to the World Cup finals!)

After spending five days doing nothing but watching futbol matches on the beach (tough, I know…) we flew to Cairo to check out some 50 degree weather, and a pyramid or two.

Argentina beat Canada 5-0, even without Lionel Messi, their star player (and my new favorite soccer player. Not that I had an old favorite soccer player…)

Woot woot!

The Khalerias have a serious case of World Cup Fever.

South Africa is such an electifying place to be during the cup, you kind of have no choice.
We’re adjusting our schedule to watch games.
We bought vuvuzelas (google that, I don’t know how to make a link on this computer).
We listen to the FIFA theme song about once an hour (Performed by Shakira. Google that too)
AND we scored tickets to watch Germany annihilate Australia last week. Awesome.

Other updates: we’re in Egypt. It’s bloody hot and the men are bloody aggresive. But the pyramids are bloody amazing.
T-two weeks until I have a computer back and I can post pretty pictures and you can stop reading my babbling. Thanks for sticking with me in the meantime…
